Preparing Your Puppy for the Unexpected
All pets should wear identification tags at all times, even if they have microchips. Tags should include a local contact number, as well as a number for a friend or out-of-town relative, and pet’s name. Also, always keep a photo of your pet with you, as this can help ensure a happy reunion should your beloved pet become lost or separated from you.
Here are some preparations that can be made should disaster strike and swift evacuation
is called for:
1. Keep a portable disaster kit in an easy-to-access location that includes per pet:
• 3-day supply of food & water
• 2 no-spill bowls
• 1 sturdy leash & collar
• Easily transported bed & toys
• A waterproof bag that includes; veterinarian contact info, photo with name of pet, medications, medical records, feeding schedules, behavior problems and a list of places, along with contact info*, where your pet can be taken should you not be there during an evacuation. *Be sure to give these folks a key and tell them where the disaster kit is located.
2. Post a readily seen, brightly colored sign in a window indicating to emergency personnel how many pets are in the house and location of the disaster kit.
Stay prepared, and in the face of unexpected circumstances, you can increase the chances that both you and your pet will survive.
